Runaway

Oh Kanye...
So much to say

Wasn't the biggest Kanye fan (and this video isn't necessarily going to turn me into one either) But, I do appreciate his love of arts.
When I first saw Through the Wire, I absolutely loved it. I thought it was simple it was heartfelt it was brilliant.
I enjoyed the first album cuz it was different and refreshing. I defended his cockiness
Till it was just too much.
Yup, after the Taylor Swift thing I definitely threw him under the bus and was completely over him
Then the Runaway performance at the VMAs
First thought after watching...
"You just can't be mad at Kanye"
I mean... you have to admit, it was good. I love the song, loved the ballet

So I was ready for the video premiere
If you haven't watched it yet... it is definitely a must see
and you have to watch the whole thing:

My Reaction

Blown Away.
This man has undeniably produced a work of art
The music
The costumes
The acting (you got the message with so little dialogue. Selita Ebanks was amazing!)
The choreography
The cinematography

Absolutely beautiful
Yes... I just called the Kanye video beautiful.

(This lady was basically amazing)

The thing that struck me most
The color story.
We've got subtle earth tones, pastels and warm brights

One of my favorite color scenes has to be the dinner
Its this cool off-white, creams and nudes against the dulled green backdrop.
Its a clean feel in this beaten up and rusty setting
The camera frames and captures this scene from all possible angles making the space seem larger, more open and more simple...

(loving the way he looks at her)
I love the scene, I love that song, I love the black-tutu-wearing-bird-like ballerinas
Very sweet
Love the bits of imperfection
The dirt, the cracks...

Then the end of the scene after they all leave the table. We are left with this birds eye view that looks like a painting. The white like an easel with splashes of color sprawled out on the table cloth

Then the music
The opening song, the closing song, the song with Rihanna and the one with John Legend. Absolutely beautiful

I'm not saying I'm a big Kanye fan.
I mean, I wish he would tone it down with the ego
Just turn down that dial down couple notches..
and I probably...
most likely...
won't be buying his album

But I can't deny that this man knows art and brought a unique video highlighting so many forms of it. I think its pretty deep and like all forms of art, can be interpreted in so many ways.
Art is not just a painting, not just color, not just music, not just dance, not just clothes, not just cinematography, not just lighting, not just a story, not just acting.....
Its all of the above..
(and more)

Mr. Gaultier

Fashion Week...

Kinda love it.
I anticipate the absolute genius and creativity.
For the breath-taking moments
...

This year I followed closely and a certain man impressed me tremendously. But before I dive into that, I just have to say...

Paris! Paris! Paris!

I mean, nothing beats Paris fashion week and it only gets better. After all, that is where high fashion was was born...

So...

His name?

Jean Paul Gaultier.
I watched the show
all smiles
and all I could think was...

Just too cool!

One of the first to use plus sized models on the runway, his show was bursting with attitude
Very rocker chick, psychedelic, don't mess with me!
Bold prints, striking reds and greens, Doc Martens, Joan Jett wigs
and then...
there were the soft pastel florals and black lace
Rock 'N Roll is here to stay and Mr. Gaultier definitely reminded us of that

And as if that wasn't cool enough...
His collection for Hermes...

Definitely one of my fave collections this season (tied very closely with a certain NY designer)
I always love an equestrian theme.
beautiful color palate
the leather and suede
the skinny belts
the tailoring
the body harnesses
the leather straps
accessories were absolute beauties
And
Even with all the leather and structure, there was a softness to it all
I absolutely adore this collection

(love, love, love this one!)

2 collections
2 different attitudes
1 man

He knows how to tell a story through design
and I love story tellers

Basically
...
If Fashion week was a competition
Jean Paul Gaultier mos def took the gold in Paris!

Monday's Life-Lesson

Today I realized

I can't plan my life better than God can.

so....

Gotta let go

I mean, devastating news from people around me.
Bad things happening everyday single day
never really hits till it inches closer to home...

Basically
...
Don't know what my tomorrow will bring
So just have to live my best today

Eat, Pray and Love - From Elle Sept 2010 issue

Basically one of my fave editorials.
And I loved the movie!

Why no just eat, pray and love

Watanabe

Last night I was catching up on the Paris Fashion Week S/S '11 shows.
Syle.com.
I spend a lot of time on the designers I love and admire
and completely ignore the ones I don't care for.

Junya Watanabe just happened to be a skip

but...
It was a Saturday night, I had just returned to the city after a long bus ride, I had a few hours to burn before bedtime
Why not?
I clicked on his collection and scrolled through

Not bad at all...
I actually really liked it. All about stripes. A very plain and simple concept executed brilliantly.

(my fave look)

Hmmm....
Interesting...

Next, I decided to see some of the past collections I missed

Spring 2009
(I.kind.of.love.this.collection)

Talk about African prints done right!
I love it because it tells a sort of story.
A real East meets West.
African girl meets Beverly Hillbilly.
We've got apples, hearts, beachballs, eyeballs, lips and even a paisley in combinations that transform into African prints.
And then...
The gingham, the denim, the eyelet, the straw and wildflower filled head wraps...

Very artistic, brilliantly done

I guess Junya Watanabe is now added to my list of designers to follow
