Where do you find inspiration?

"Travelling, diving into other cultures face first. The colours everywhere, the colour palette of shotgun houses in New Orleans, spices in Marrakesh, nail polishes on shelf at my favourite nail shop in Brooklyn. I just left Rwanda and have never seen colours used in such natural and spectacular way in my life. I see colour before I see any other element in design."

"I am very low maintenance. I think I am lucky when I get to wash my face at night. I occasionally get facials by a miracle worker in Los Angeles named Mirta. However, apparently getting facials is not the way to erase months of carelessness and angry pores. Sleep is vital, happiness is key so I feel the most beautiful with those two elements combined."

What does success means to you?

"Defining success on my own terms. First, being a loving and committed mother. I have failed in all things if I have not achieved that. Being an artist that creates to express the needs of my own, and in the process hopefully inspiring others. Having the financial stability to support the lifestyle that makes me feel fulfilled. I know that happiness is a temporary state of mind, success means for me constantly growing, evolving to find that place."

How do you feel about being recognise for your great sense of style?

"I feel completely flattered and also very humbled."

Your wish list for the season?

"I am still on last season wish list! I still need to dive into some of the insane sales of things I drooled over but could not fix myself to buy new things when I have a new house to furnish. There is a pink and orange wool jacket from Bottega Veneta that I am lusting over. A yellow Proenza Skirt I have been trying to get my hands on forever. I am definitely into waiting until I can truly afford the statement pieces I love, that I will wear forever! I still have couture dresses that came out 4 years ago, that have not worn yet. I am definitely not in a rush to wear things because they are the new new. I guess when I will decide to wear those pieces people will be calling them vintage (Laughs)."

What is your opinion about the black representation in the fashion industry?

"I think it is evolving, and that is a beautiful thing! Now when I flip trough magazines I can see just as many beautiful black models in major campaigns as any other race. Unique, striking,beautiful women. I felt so extremely blessed to be Rimmel's first black spokesperson, and to be embraced fully for being exactly who I am. And standing next to Kate Moss, with my Afro bigger than days light. I don't by any means consider myself the most qualified for model material. I think that people tend to respond to what is real. Black women carry that flame with so much ease and confidence. It is being captured and celebrated on all fronts in fashion now. I have friends who are doing greats things, that movement is very real and well deserved!"

The proud chef went ahead and bragged about the day his waffles beat Bobby Flay's on Throwdown

That was all I needed to validate my sweet decision

For my choice of dinges he suggested the Spekuloos

A sweet peanut buttery concoction

Smoothed on top of a warm fluffy yet crisp waffle

Friday night was an eating-takeout-sipping-moscato-movie-watching kinda Friday night

Somehow, I tend gravitate towards movies I've seen before

Better off with something I know and love than a potential disappointment

Decided to go with The Last Kiss

A 2006 movie with Zach Braff, Casey Affleck and Rachel Bilson

Watched it years ago on a plane trip

And what I imagined would be a stupid love story

Ended up being a relatable tale told simply and honestly

loved it

Watching it again, I picked up so much more

Lessons about relationships, communication, making choices

I attended my first photography award show - The Lucie Awards

Wide eyed, I remained inspired and thoroughly entertained through the whole 90 minute ceremony

Walking into Jazz at the Lincoln Center

Wasn't exactly sure what to expect, yet excited out of my mind

"Wait till you see the displays at the show, you'll be blown away!"

It came straight from the director's mouth the weekend before the show

An understatement in retrospect

The Lucie Awards is in it's 9th year of celebrating the achievements of incredibly talented photographers. International Photographer of the Year; Discovery of the Year; Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year; and Fashion Layout of the Year were a few of the categories. In addition, six photographers were specially honored for high achievement in their respective fields.

Amazing

As each nominee was presented, a brief slideshow of their work was shown on screen

The kinda stuff I could view all day

Highlights:

1. Discovery of the Year winner, Anna di Prospero's captivating images:

Love the way she captured these portraits with a sweet solemnness

The soft texture of the plant life reflected on the glass adds a whole other dimension to the image

2. The Deeper Perspective of the Year category had to have been my favorite

Nominees documented touching stories through photos

Like mini movies, those stills had the power to stir souls.

Darcy Padilla told the complex, touching story of Julie through 18 years of drug abuse, poverty, abusive relationships, births, AIDS and death:

Nothing less than touching and inspiring

You flip through the pages of TIME, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stones, Life, Vogue, GQ

The photos are stunning, the articles are engaging

But sometimes we fail to imagine the artist behind the photos

So seeing these honorees

Hearing their speeches

Looking through their work

gave a deeper meaning

Inspiring

Bill Eppridge

(my fave)

The artist behind LIFE magazine images for years - he was responsible for covering the famous Kennedy Assassination image among other notable achievements

He's got almost six decades of photojournalism under his belt and is barely ever seen without his camera

His speech was humorous yet insightful and motivating

He thanked the competition, because it's what kept him going

And what I loved the most

He thanked his Nikon

Love it because

As much as I've dreamt of switching to a Canon, which is more user friendly

I've fallen so in love with my Nikon that I just might stick to it

Forever and ever and ever!!

4. Last but not least - Annie Leibovitz!!

Graceful and humble, she was a presenter for the night

I've admired her work in portrait photography for years

Vogue, Rolling Stones, Vanity Fair - her work is uniquely brilliant

So I was kinda star-struck seeing her

The smile plastered on my face must have been noticed from a mile away

No way jose am I going to eat soy

or vegan cupcakes

But as time goes by

I guess you can say I've become more adventurous

So when that chocolate vegan cupcake arrived on my desk

I knew it was time

Tried not to think of the "V" word

And went for it

Turned out this vegan cupcake wasn't so alien after all

Surprisingly good!

Chocolate was sweet and rich

Last week I went to a "liquid tasting" event

Vice Liquid Catering basically caters shots and mixed drinks to private events

What a great idea!

The two owners found a way to make the "manly" drinks do-able for ladies

and the "girly" ones not so embarrassing for men

ex: "Sleepwalker" was an incredible mix of Johnny Walker and who knows what

"Sinful Sangria"

Strongest I've ever had

But still so good

It was a fun event

Drinks, finger foods, deserts and good company

Held at Georgia - a vintage looking boutique hair salon in Soho

I sipped a little/tried one or three glasses of everything

Then got to picture taking

We sampled creative shots: Apple Pie, Lemon Drops, El Diablo

Wish I knew their secret

Each drink had a unique taste with dynamic flavors

The "Apple Pie" was warm and tasted just like fresh baked pie with a cinnamon sugar aftertaste

The "Lemon Drops" were ice cold and too strong for me to finish

My fave was the El Diablo - a sweet tequila shot

We had brunch at Market Cafe located in midtown west

The sweetest time

Late enough to avoid the brunch crowd

Yet just in time to escape a dinner menu

and you just don't want to leave

"The Tanning of America" - hip-hop's economic dominance

Last night I attended the kick off of Columbia University’s Black Business Student Association (BBSA) Executive Speakers Series with Steve Stoute discussing his new book, The Tanning of America: How Hip Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy.

{An aside - I love Columbia University! Its such a freakin' beautiful campus! Sheesh!}

If you haven’t yet heard of Mr. Stout, check out his stats:

- He rose from roadie to road manager of Kid n’ Play to managing top artists such as Mary J Blije and Nas

- Served as president of Urban Music for Sony Music Entertainment

- Founder of Translation, an advertising company in which he partners with Jay-Z

- He’s seamlessly married high profile celebrities with Fortune 500 companies (fashion icon, Valentino with technology from Samsung; Beyonce and Tommy Hilfiger; Justin Timberlake and McDonald’s. . . )

- - Took Carol’s Daughter from a single store operation in Brooklyn to a multi-million dollar empire with distribution across Sephora, Macy’s, Dillards

The list goes on and on. The guy, no doubt, has got an impressive resume. Hearing his story last night at Columbia University was pretty intriguing. It was the perfect atmosphere – a large classroom filled with young professionals, MBA students, aspiring entrepreneurs, and undergrad students with dream filled eyes. Before giving a brief background, Steve gave a summary of his success: “I was a person that just did what I said and the scary part is that that’s a commodity. People don’t do what they say”

He then carried us through his journey from selling loans to managing artists, to dropping it all at the height of his career to start again from the bottom, creating an advertising company.

He shifted on to the concepts of his new book, The Tanning Of America. Tanning requires understanding the culture and is defined as, “the phenomenon beyond demographic where no longer does your ethnicity drive culture. . . Without cultural curiosity, there is no innovation”

In a conversational manner, he answered questions from the audience in a blunt, straight up and to the point approach.

“Culture of hip-hop has done more for racial relations than MLK. If not for hip-hop our president wouldn’t be black! If it wasn’t for hip-hop you think Jay-Z would have his empire? Do you know how many people he employs?”

It was a statement that struck a chord within the audience, giving us all something to ponder as we wrapped up and headed over to the reception/book signing.

The whole conversation lasted slightly over an hour and I couldn't help noticing that he didn't go deep enough when it came to his story. He made it seem like his success came mainly from being lucky enough to be put in the right place at the right time. . .

Despite me wishing he delved in more, I was baited enough to buy the book and have him sign it at the reception but I did have to ask:

"What was your initial dream?"

"I wanted to be a football player" he replied, with a slight smile

So there it is, from the dream of becoming the next NFL star, to managing top artists, to becoming a well-respected force in the advertising industry. Life tends to take you through the unexpected

The Tanning of America, It’s a book Steve Stout wrote for college students and young executives but really, as I have started reading, it’s one for everybody. If you’ve got a dream, an idea you want heard, you can find a little somethin’ something’ through the pages to help you see things through a new light.

Feeding Your Soul

The one thing that never gets old about the city are the walks.

Those daily, walks that we are forced to take living in such a metropolitan area.

It could be the three block stretch from the train to office or the 20, 30, maybe 50 block stroll we decide we might as well go on 'cuz it's nice out.

Those walks, they never get old.

'cuz Its just you, your thoughts

and the city

And one thing I love about those mandatory walks

There's always something new

And if you're not finding something new each and every time

You're just not looking

It could be the student wearing that well styled outfit

Could be the sweetest little pastry shop hidden in the corner

Or maybe even an interesting street artist

Tonight I decided to walk. Summer is nearing it's end and the cool breezes are making their way through. Walked from the upper west back to my lower east side abode. Made a quick pit stop at Union Square because. . . well. . . Union Square is a show on its own. Tonight it was an open mic "speakbox" where passer-bys could grab the mic and freely speak their minds. At the moment it was a young curly blonde with loose fitted vintage garb talking about "the conspiracy". I took a walking break and settled by stair railings to join the growing group of free spirited listeners. She delivered a compelling speech about this consumer society we live in. We want more and more and more stuff. Material stuff. The more we get the more we forget to feed our souls. What exactly does it mean to "feed your soul"? That's for you to interpret. I gave my soul a bite to eat as I pondered her words, then continued my journey.

Although it was late, I walked towards St. Marks Place to try out a Crif Dog. I got a Scout Mob coupon for a free hot dog and apparently you're not a real New Yorker till you've got your "usual" Crif Dog order memorized. So on my quest to become a real New Yorker, I google mapped the place, which was luckily right on my way home. Still debating whether or not it was a good idea to eat a deep fried hotdog wrapped in bacon and topped with avocado. . . (i mean, i did walk all these blocks so its ok right?. . .).

Almost walked right in till a grass green shop stole my attention - The Chocolate Library. The name alone was enough to draw me in. A sweet little place lined with shelves of gourmet chocolates from around the world, it had a light earthy feel with jazz music playing softly in the background. Probably had a slight smile plastered on my face as I perused the library (I heart smart small businesses). I checked out the neatly displayed array of gourmet goodies and was offered some samples by the owner, Byron. Couldn't dare say no. I had a piece of dark chocolate with raspberry filling and a yummy chocolate bean filled with chocolate. Byron schooled me about how gourmet chocolate is indeed good for you and the darker the better. We chatted a bit about the well designed space; wine tasting events; the "fun way to learn about wine" game he created; and plans on opening a new location on broadway. Almost bought a bar but decided it was too late for all that (esp since I was inching towards the white ones). This is one library I will mos def be visiting often so no need for chocolate this late at night.

I continued my journey home with a well fed soul after refreshing conversation, brilliant displays, interesting street speakers, and a new view of the city.
